In North Walsham we built a raised Indian sandstone patio using Monsoon Black sandstone, framed and retained by oak sleepers. The before photos show the sleeper edging set out, the area filled with a compacted hardcore sub-base and a wacker plate used to consolidate it before laying. A recessed chamber lid was built into the paving so a drainage cover stays accessible while blending in with the surrounding slabs. The new patio runs up to the building's French doors and a separate paved area sits against a traditional flint-and-brick wall, with picket fencing or railings noted to be added to the higher section at a later date.
Monsoon Black is a riven Indian sandstone with deep charcoal tones shot through with rust, gold and silvery veining, and it comes alive when wet, glistening into a rich, multi-toned surface. Raised and edged with warm oak sleepers, the patio gains height and a clean, defined frame, while the dark stone sits handsomely against both the flint walling and the timber doors. It is a characterful, level outdoor space ready for furniture and pots.
