Porcelain Patio & Paving In Norwich, Norfolk

The Ultimate Modern, Low-Maintenance Garden Paving

Porcelain paving has revolutionised garden design in the UK. Offering a sleek, contemporary finish that is incredibly durable, it has fast become the number one choice for homeowners in Norfolk looking for a premium outdoor living space. At Breckland Paving, we are specialists in the precision installation of high-quality porcelain patios.

Unlike natural stone, which can fade and absorb stains, porcelain is an engineered product designed to withstand everything the British weather can throw at it. It retains its colour, resists algae, and stays looking brand new for decades with minimal effort.

Why Choose a Porcelain Patio?

Porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures, creating a material that is harder, denser, and far less porous than concrete or sandstone. This brings huge practical benefits:

    • Stain Resistant: Because porcelain is non-porous, spillages like red wine, BBQ grease, and coffee do not soak in. They simply sit on the surface and can be wiped away.

    • Anti-Slip Safety: We only install R11-rated anti-slip porcelain. The surface texture provides excellent grip underfoot, even when wet, making it safer for children and elderly relatives than slimy decking or smooth stone.

    • Scratch Proof: The surface is incredibly hard-wearing. Garden furniture, pet claws, and heavy plant pots will not scratch or mark the paving.

    • Fade Resistant: The UV-stable pigments ensure your patio will be the exact same colour in 10 years as the day it was laid.
    • Creating the “Indoor-Outdoor” Look: One of the biggest trends in modern architecture is the “seamless transition.” Because porcelain tiles are available in finishes that mimic indoor flooring (like marble, wood effect, or polished concrete), we can match your internal kitchen floor to your external patio.

By using bi-fold doors and continuing the same style of paving outside, you effectively double your living space, making your garden feel like an extension of your home.

Our Technical Installation Process for Porcelain Patios

Laying porcelain is a specialist skill. Many general builders get this wrong because they treat it like concrete slabs. Porcelain does not absorb water, meaning it will not stick to a standard mortar bed on its own.

At Breckland Paving, we follow the strict industry code of practice for porcelain installation:

Correct Sub-Base

We install a fully compacted Type 1 sub-base to prevent any movement or sinking.

Priming Slurry

We paint the back of every single tile with a specialist bonding primer (slurry) before laying. This creates a chemical bond between the non-porous tile and the mortar. Without this, tiles will eventually come loose and "rock."

Full Wet Bed

We lay tiles on a full bed of mortar, not "dots and dabs." This eliminates voids under the tiles, preventing them from cracking under the weight of furniture or foot traffic.

Exterior Grouting

We use a high-performance exterior grout that is water-resistant and flexible, preventing weeds from growing in the joints.

Is porcelain slippery when wet?

No. Exterior porcelain is manufactured specifically with a textured surface (R11 rating) to provide grip. It is significantly less slippery than wet timber decking or algae-covered sandstone.

Like any paving, it will warm up, but light-coloured porcelain reflects sunlight and stays cooler than dark slate or asphalt.

Yes, but we must use a thicker 20mm or 30mm “driveway specification” tile and a reinforced concrete base to handle the weight of vehicles. Standard patio porcelain is for foot traffic only.

Maintenance is incredibly easy. You don’t need expensive sealants or treatments. A simple sweep and an occasional wash down with warm soapy water or a pressure washer is all that is needed to keep it pristine.

Beautiful smoke grey porcelain patio completed in Wymondham with a slate boarder. The customer came to us after being told by two other companies that it's impossible to get a nice curve on porcelain and that it's too hard to cut. So challenge accepted yet again the team have pulled it out the bag and another very happy customer added to the list. We also installed recess lids to this project to blend in with the patio but yet still create easy access to drainage chambers 100% better looking than the old plastic lids.
