The Science of the Sub-Base: Our Installation Process

Step 1: Site Clearance & Excavation
We begin with a full site clearance, excavating to a depth of 200mm–250mm to remove all organic matter. We then utilise our digger work expertise to ensure the sub-grade is perfectly levelled.
Step 2: Geotextile & MOT Type 1
We install a heavy-duty membrane to separate the soil from the stone, followed by a minimum of 150mm of MOT Type 1 aggregate. This is mechanically compacted in layers to create a rigid, unyielding foundation.
Step 3: Concrete Edge Restraints
Tarmac and Asphalt require a solid "frame" to prevent the edges from crumbling. We secure the entire perimeter with concrete kerbstones or decorative brickwork haunched in a heavy-duty concrete bed.
Step 4: The Binding & Wearing Courses
We lay the material in two stages:
The Base Course: A thick layer of large-stone material for structural support.
The Wearing Course: A final layer of fine-graded tarmac or asphalt for a smooth, water-resistant finish. Each layer is rolled while hot to ensure a permanent bond.

How long does a tarmac driveway take to set?
